MSI R5830 Twin Frozr II Reviews

april 14 2010 review by guru3d

MSI R5830 Twin Frozr II MSI R5830 Twin Frozr II

The 5830 is more or less a 'crippled' 5850/5870, it has the same GPU but has three out of the ten clusters of shader processors disabled.

The older Radeon HD 4850/4870/4890 had 800 shader processors while the new 58xx lineup has up to 1600 shader processors (AKA stream processors). Here's an overview of the 58xx line-up:

  • Radeon HD 5830 has 7x 160 Shader clusters = 1120 Shader processors
  • Radeon HD 5850 has 9x 160 Shader clusters = 1440 Shader processors
  • Radeon HD 5870 has 10x 160 Shader clusters = 1600 Shader processors

What does the Twin Frozr II edition bring us when compared to the reference 5830?

  1. A better Thermal Design.
  2. Military Class Components
  3. voltage is up to 1.35V

There is no performance difference in-between the reference product and the MSI R5830 Twin Frozr II, but it will probaly be a better overclocker.

Conclusion:

Bringing the 5830 down to seven shader clusters with a total of 1120 shader processors and cutting the accumulated color ROP engines in half, sixteen instead of thirty-two, slow down overall performance significantly, when compared to the 5850/70, but nevertheless it still is an interesting product. It's probably the best 5830 around, with a great overclock potential, that is if you use the AfterBurner OC software with voltage regulation.

Overclocking:

The reviewer OCed this card from 800 MHz to 928 MHz, and the memory from 4000 MHz to 4800 MHz. That's a 15-20% performance increase, which is quite a lot.

Benchmarks:

Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Metro 2033, Just Cause 2, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Colin McRae DiRT2, Resident Evil 5, Far Cry 2, Crysis WARHEAD, Tom Clancy's HAWX, Anno 1404, 3DMark Vantage, Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway.

Test Setup:

Motherboard: eVGA X58 Classified -- CPU: Core i7 965 @ 3750 MHz (25x150 @ 1.35v) -- Memory 3x2GB DDR3 Corsair 1866 MHz __ PSU: 1200 watts -- OS: Windows 7 x64

Compared To:

ATI Radeon HD5750, HD5770, HD5830, HD5850, HF5870, HD5970 2GB, HIS 5870 iCooler, GeForce Gtx 470 and 480.
