MSI N480GTX Lightning Reviews

october 29 2010 review by hardocp

MSI N480GTX Lightning

The cooler has two 9CM PWM powered fans, which cool a bonded aluminum heat-sink featuring five 8mm heat pipes, embedded into a large, nickel-plated copper base.

For high-budget gamers who need a video card now, this card is a solid choice, on the other hand it's simply not that much better than the ATI Radeon HD 5870 that is even several months older, has more mature drivers, and is nearly as fast as the GeForce GTX 480. It was only slower in Lost Planet 2.

Test Setup:

  • CPU : Intel Core i7 920
  • HDD : WD 500GB
  • Memory : 3x2GB Corsair DDR3 1600MHz
  • Motherboard : ASUS P6T6 WS Revolution
  • OS : Win 7 Ultimate x64
  • PSU : Cooler Master Real Power Pro 1250 watt

Overclocking:

The GPU core was OCed @ 920MHz and the GDDR5 ram to 4.176GHz.

Benchmarks:

Fan Noise, Power consumption, Temperature Test, Lost Planet 2, Civilization V, F1 2010, Mafia II, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.
