Hardware enthusiasts and overclockers have allways liked the 10,000 RPM spindle speed of this hard drive.
Packaging:
The WD VelociRaptor 600GB hDD has a sealed anti-static plastic packet with a sachet of dessicants to keep it dry, like most OEM-packed hard drives. This OEM-drive is the same as the retail version that also has a 5-year warranty.
Breather Holes:
The WD VelociRaptor 600 GB drive has a small, barely-marked breather hole on the top plate, which allows condensation inside the hard drive to escape. This hole must not be covered.
SATA3:
This drive has a 32 MB buffer and has a max sustained internal transfer rate of 145 MB/s.
Compared to:
- 2 TB WD Caviar Black
- 1 TB WD Caviar Black
- 2 TB WD RE4-GP
- 2 TB WD Caviar Green
- 1.5 TB Samsung EcoGreen F2 HD154UI
- 1 TB WD Caviar Green AFD
- 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ
- 300 GB WD VelociRaptor
Benchmarks:
Surface Temperature, Disk WinMark 99, WinBench 99 2.0.
Conclusion:
This HDD has very fast seek times, average seek times of 4.2 ms (write), 3.6 ms (read) and a track-to-track seek time of just 0.4 ms. When Compared to the 300GB VelociRaptor (4.7 ms, 4.2 ms and 0.7 ms), or the 2 TB Western Digital
Caviar Black's average 8.9 ms seek time. This drive now has 600,000 load/unload cycles, instead of 50,000 cycles. The new VelociRaptor is also much cooler @ idles - its max surface temperature is less than a degree Celcius above ambient
temperature. In short this 10,000 RPM drive has a ground-breaking performance and storage capacity.
